Project Moonbase - DJ Bongoboy & MC Zirconium - Futurologists, antiquarians and explorers in the outer realms of the music multiverse

Project Moonbase is filled with music to surprise, delight and occasionally horrify you. Made by someone who really cares (and his prisoner). We bring you music you’ve never heard before that will put a smile on your face, open your third eye and make you dance. We love space age bachelor pad music, library music, charity shop cheese, hauntology, ping pong stereo, moog music, sitar-driven psychedelia, lounge, the retro-futuristic, contemporary electronica, soundtrack music, radiophonics, euro-pop, orchestral-pop, industrial-opera, hyphens, 8bit, chip tune, skwee, uneasy listening and steel drums. We’ve been known to salute the theramin, sidle up to an ondes Martenot and smile beneficently on the ukelele. Every episode includes the unnecessary news: the strange, the weird, the futuristic and the fun. Join us now and in the future! This week we celebrate the life and work of one of Britain's greatest big band leaders, soundtrack composers, library music composers and time/mind-bending musicians, Basil Kirchin. Hull City of Culture 2017 recently put on a weekend of the great man's music, which DJ Bongoboy was lucky enough to attend. Inspired by that, we've put our own tribute together. There's music from every part of Basil's life in music, as well as tracks by bands who have been inspired by him.
We've neglected the world of geometry for far too long and so this week we thought it time we brought you the latest developments in shapes. Most of the tracks on the show are about specific polygons and, because we like to order the world around us, the tracks about polygons are played with an increasing number of sides. We leave it to you, dear listener, to predict the upper limit to which we soar. WARNING: An assertion in the first part of this show could bring the world of mathematics...
Every season we have one or two theme-free shows where we bring you some of our favourite recent discoveries. For this first show of "likes" in Season 3, we have synthwave, darkwave, retrowave, lollywave, breakcore, j-pop and no doubt many other musical genres which may or may not exist.

Following on from our interview with Jean-Jacques Perrey and Dana Countryman earlier in the year, we caught up with these two fine gentlemen again towards the end of 2008 to talk about the second album they made together, Destination Space. The interview was split over two shows and broadcast on a local radio station. Until now these shows have not been available as podcast. But that's all changed now.

In 2008, Jean-Jacques Perrey and his musical partner Dana Countryman appeared at the first AV Festival, which took place at the Sage, Gateshead in March of that year. In the afternoon, Jean-Jacques presented a lecture talking about his life of music-making, where he also gave a demonstration of how to make a tape loop. Amongst many others in the audience for that talk were James Cargill and Trish Keenan from Broadcast and Dick Mills from the Radiophonic Workshop (who DJ Bongoboy ended up...
This week it's all about the light and the dark or, more specificaly, the black and the white. Some have controversially argued that this might be a companion show to our Rainbow Collection. But nothing could be further from the truth! Look forward to some very easy listening, some library music, electronically-enhanced exotica and even some new releases.

Gradually emerging from hibernation, the crew aboard the Moonbase bring you a suitably low-key start to Season 3 with a selection of soothing tunes to ease you into the new year.

Patron saint of the show, Jean-Jacques Perrey, recently moved on from this planet to spend eternity with the stars. His music was a perfect example of all the things we love at PMB: humour, virtuosity, ping-pong stereo, the Moog synthesizer, tape loops, farmyard animals and even the electric sitar. This is our tribute to the great man - and such was the quality and quantity of his output that we've managed to put together a whole show of his music without playing a single track we've played on...
It's time to pop on the marigolds, arrange a selection of cleaning products on the worktop and get scrubbing before also giving yourself a good hose-down. Yes, on this week's show we celebrate cleanliness and the art of attaining cleanliness. We have some polished sunshine from the 1930s, Welsh brass, American bathrooms, two washing-related tracks from Japan, some clean retrowave and even a couple of commercial breaks.
It’s time for the second in our series all about personal pronouns and this week it’s all about YOU, dear listener. Yes, for this show we move to the second person but without trying to point the finger. We cover both the singular and plural you in the show – see if YOU can spot which is which… Listen now: Your browser does not support the audio element. Download the MP3 The Music 1. Calibro 35: You Filthy Bastards! from Traditori di Tutti 2. Grizzler: You Got Blue Bits On You from...
It's all gone a bit Upside Down at the Moonbase for our Halloween special this year as we take inspiration from spooky hit TV series Stranger Things. Yes, it's an all-retrowave trip back to the imaginary 80s with zombies, werewolves, zombie werewolves, creeping terror and horror-based exercise.
After the world's longest first Season (of 273 shows no less!), we thought it time to regroup and recalibrate. So, feeling reinvigorated after a few weeks working out in the mind gym, we present the first show in Season 2! There's no particular theme for this week's show. Instead it's a selection of some of our favourite new (and old) tracks which we've uncovered over the last few months.

As if we didn't have enough series on the go at the moment, we've taken the foolhardy decision to kick off another one, this collection all about personal pronouns. That's "he" and "she" to you and me. But before straying into the second or third person, we thought it best to start with a show all about me, me, me.
The dinner gong has been rung, dear listener, as we invite you to join us for a sumptuous three-course banquet here on the moon. For those unaware of 'mukbang', we were inspired to put this show together by the YouTube phenomenom of 'eating broadcasts' made popular in South Korea in 2008. For the starter, we serve up French library music, Peruvian saxophony and some extreme soup. The main course is a double helping of sushi with a cheeseburger chaser. And for dessert we have a Japanese toy...

It's time to pay our second visit to the world of all things cute. Primarily Japan but we have a couple of exceptions to the rule. Prepare to enjoy a majorette with sticks for arms, dancing vegetables, a celebration of having a nice sit down and a Spanish ice cream, not to mention many more adorable selections.
We've reached the end of the rainbow (collection), dear listener, with a show all about the rainbow itself. It's been an emotional journey, with a fight almost breaking out on the question of whether we should do a show about indigo. But we hope you have enjoyed every colourful chapter along the way.
Before you think we've gone ultra-niche and come up with a set of tracks about spiders in Tokyo who are specialists in conservation, no, dear listener. No, this week's show is a chance for us to catch up with some exciting new releases and reissues. We open with a double-barreled blast of brass from London, followed by a track from the ridiculously-named Diamondback Manhunter. There's also a track from the new album from Belbury Poly as well as the lead single from the debut album by Vanishing...

We're heading back to the imaginary 80s again this week, dear listener, with a retrowave show all about getting the hell out of here. Yes, it's time to escape! It's also time to enjoy a truly global selection of tunes, with digitally synthesized music from France, Greece, the hue-K, Sweden and even Hungary!
This week, dear listener, we start a new cut-out-and-keep series all about the days of the week. Perhaps contentiously, we start with Monday. Recognised by many as the first day of the week, we do also appreciate that for large parts of the world, Monday is actually the second day of the week. However, for future reference, the official position here on the moon is that we subscribe to international standard ISO 8601.

It's time to enjoy a refreshing, ice cold glass of milk, dear listener, as we open the carton and pour out chiptune, retrowave and radiophonics. We have a commercial break and there's also the soundtrack to a highly instructive video about milking a cow.

We're back to the fake 80s for this week's show, dear listener, with our first concept album: a whole show about driving, at night, in a Delorean. We have a fist-pumping selection of retrowave and synthwave from around the globe, as well as a special late night cruise to Shrewsbury. There's also a track from the latest edition in the Bedroom Cassette Masters series, an edition which features an almost subliminal appearance from none other than our very own Orb (praise it).
Yes, it's the long awaited return of our cut-out-and-keep Rainbow Collection with the almost last show in the series. As we approach the end of the visible spectrum, we arrive at plumptious purple, with a show of fake 80s, very gentle Japanese heavy metal, radioactive Russian pop, bucolic militarism, a sprinkling of percussive atonality and we leave you with some highly colourful edutatinment.
It's time to chip away at the huge mountain of new arrivals here at the Moonbase, dear listener, with a show of new release, new reissues and tracks it's just taken us a while to notice. We have some 80s-era British library music, Italian library music from the 70s, fake 80s music from right now, a rare example of a "nice" Sun Ra cover, a Moogtacular double-bill, spookological music from two very generous labels and some empowering music to make you feel as confident as a Golden...

We're hurtling back millions of years for this week's show, dear listener as we bring you a show all about terrifying lizards. There's music from Vancouver, which may or may not have a beach, improvised music from Trondheim, Nazi dinosaurs from Australia and a version of the theme to Jurassic Park with the lyrics rightfully restored. We also have a remarkable 1980s treatment of a 1920s vision of prehistory and we close with a terrifying children's song from South Korea.

It's time to celebrate the work of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration on the show this week, dear listener. We have a Moonbase classic from the patron saint of PMB, Jean-Jacques Perrey as well as some Indian retro-futurism from visionary Ananda Shankar. But this show mostly contains tracks from musicians we've never played on the show before - and some of them are even quite new! We apologise in advance for this flirtation with the contemporary. Normal service will be resumed...

We're still full of the joys of spring here on the moon, dear listener as we bring you a show all about blossom and the trees which produce it. The fruiting seed for this idea was the arrival of a lovely new album on Ghost Box by exciting new pop duo Hintermass (aka Jon Brooks and Tim Felton) which has the sound of folk music from the future. In addition to that, we also have some Norwegians sounding Scottish, some TV advert music from Germany, some Greek philosophy by way of Taiwan and a...

We return from our recent hiatus with an admittedly somewhat deranged chimera of a show for you, dear listener. This is two themes for the price of one as we bring you a show about both country music and the current Easter festivities. We have country Moog x 2, Japanese banjo enhancements, chiptune cake music, two bunny rabbits and some extremely futuristic folk music from Pakistan.

It's time to catch up with some new releases and reissues on the show this week. We have a couple of new reissues from Dutton Vocalion, including a version of show favorite Caravan which we've inexplicably neglected up until now. There are a couple of tracks which could be fake 80s but sound more like fake 90s filtered through the fake 70s. There's also a double bill from Japan and we close the show with a couple of cornerstones/pillars of the Moonbase musical universe.

This week we celebrate the work of the construction industry, with a show all about bricks and mortar. This week we take a good look behind the mask, with a selection of music which isn't quite what it appears to be on first listen. We have Frenchmen pretending to be Japanese, a Japanese man pretending that Duke Ellington was also Japanese, an Irishman pretending to be Hawaiian, the sound of exotic Hackney and a duo pretending it's still the 1980s (#callback). WARNING: Surprisingly, no Germans.

It's time to take another trip back to the imaginary 80s with, ironically, some of the newest music we've ever played on the show. We have highly-polished, adrenalin pumping tunes from such epicentres of 80s music such as Milwaukee, the Isle of White, Finland and Rome.

We return to our journey through the rainbow this week, dear listener, with an all-blue edition of the show. But rest assured that, while the theme might be blue, the music itself is very much up-beat. We have some French easy-disco, home-made music boxes, a Welsh TV theme tune, The Herb, steel drums and plenty plenty Moog synthesizer. WARNING: Dangerously high levels of harpsichord.

We kick the new year off by blasting away the cobwebs with some splendid reissues and new releases. We've got French space disco, a lost retro-futuristic relic from 1977, British exotica, Italian space-themed cinematic funk, something from Manchester's answer to Sun Ra and we close with a meditative piece from Tim Gane's current band ahead of their imminient triple-LP release - and there's plenty more besides too.

It's time for an extremely sweet edition of the show, dear listener, as we bring you a selection of some of our favourite boilings. PLEASE NOTE: Any connection to the festive season is purely coincidental.
Continuing on our journey through The Rainbow Collection, we reach that most verdant of colours, green. You'll hear slightly creepy library music from the UK and France, a brand new release from Ghost Bost and no less than four German artistes, dear listener, not to mention the First Lady of the Hammond.
This week we explore the sunny uplands of our journey through the rainbow, dear listener, as we reach a colour associated variously with amusement, harmony and, er, envy, namely yellow. We have some 60s J-pop, a German pretending to be a Latin American pretending to be Japanese, a song-poem, some exotic Moog and the drifting stereo sounds of Werner Müller.
We take a break from our trip through the colours of the rainbow this week, dear listener, with a trip around (some of) the capitals of the world. We hope it proves to be as much of a journey of discovery as it was for us as we share some very heart-felt and often quite puzzling celebrations of some of the world's great cities. Special thanks are due to our Canadian ambassador for finding a great 80s tribute to her very own capital city.
Hot on the heels of last week's red show comes the next colour in The Rainbow Collection, namely orange. We have a surprisingly high representation of French music this week, dear listener, in particular French musicians pretending to be from South America. There's also beat poetry, exotica, 80s electronics and we close with a double bill of kawaii and classic Moog.

This week's show sees the beginning of a new series we are calling The Rainbow Collection with each show in the collection taking one colour as its theme. We start our journey at the lower end of the visible spectrum with a ruddy great show about the colour red. We have library music from the UK and France, an Italian double-bill and even some music from one of the ancient kingdoms of South America.
Time to catch up with some of our favourite new releases and reissues of recent weeks, dear listener. We have the new single from Swedish exoticists Joe Davolaz (featuring vocals from Kumisolo), a track from former Auteurs front man Luke Haines and his new all-analogue synth album about nuclear bunkers, a Colombian party from the Meridian Brothers and the organist they pay tribute to on their new album, some East German athletics training music, a track from the new single by ex-Stereolab...
Continuing our seemingly obsessive interest in modes of transport - and to show that we do listen to you, dear listener - we present this week a selection of tunes on the subject of bus travel, a theme indirectly requested by our Canadian ambassador. There are plenty of stops along the way as we travel via New Zealand, Germany (two stops), the US, Sweden, Japan, Ghana and, most exotic of all, Leeds in the UK.
Welcome to a truly diabolical edition of the show, dear listener. Yes, that's right, it's time to fill the house with cobwebs, turn all the lights out and hope that a mob of sinister children (dressed, inexplicably, as superheroes) don't come knocking on the door pleading for a trick or, perish the thought, a treat.
It's time to get out on the high road, dear listener, for our altogether more high-octane follow-up to last week's bicycle special. So put your leathers on and join us as we take you - at moderate speed - down the highway to hell...
After all the high-speed action of the last couple of weeks, it's time to take a rather more sedate approach this week with a show all about the gentle art of bicycling. We aren't talking middle-aged men in lycra here, dear listener but rather more tweed, trouser-clips (where appropriate) and poncho (if wet).
Many listeners will have wondered why last week's all-motorway show singularly failed to play a version of that krautrock classic, Autobahn. Well now the secret machinations at work here behind the scenes at the Moonbase can be unveiled to reveal an entire show dedicated to this modern musical masterpiece! We've tried to find as many different approaches to this tune as we could, dear listener, but we won't spoilt the surprise by telling you whether there are any steel drum or chiptune versions...

It's time to take to the open road, dear listener, as we celebrate the thrill of endless miles of tarmac, green verges and service stations unfolding before you on the motorway. And in case you're wondering, "why no version of Autobahn?" well let's just say that the motorway theme continues next week...
It's time to stretch the legs and embark on a journey out of town into the country - and back again - on this week's show, dear listener. Inspired by the imminent release of Vic Mars bucolic new LP, The Land and the Garden, we've put together a series of tracks which take alternating views of the town versus the country.
Join us, dear listener, on a long-overdue journey through some of the brightest stars in the night sky and discover just how easy-going this whole astronomy thing really is. You can also look forward to a future show complementing this one which will be all about the inky blackness between the stars...
It's time to explore the ambivalent world of the left and the right on the show this week, dear listener. We were considering doing a show of left tracks -vs- right tracks but, strangely enough, most song-writers out there seem to want to cover both hands at once. However, we have still managed to a cajole a few nursery rhymes to do battle with each other. We also have not one but two yé-yé takes on the left and the right and there's even an academic discussion about Indo-European linguistics...

Time to catalog and file away some of the new releases which have arrived via the inter-space vacuum tubes over the last few weeks, dear listener. It's time to pop the jim jams on, dear listener, for a thoroughly deserved lie-down after last week's frenetic show. Yes, it's all about snoozing this week - but please do try to stay awake until the end of the show. This week's theme was largely inspired by a singularly odd piece of recording by none other than Jeff Bridges. We'll say no more about it, other than that you should prepare for quite a strange evening in.

It's time for possibly the sweetest show we've ever put together up here at the Moonbase, with an hour of some of the cutest pop we've ever clapped our ears on. Inevitably, most of the tracks this week hail from home of cuteness, Japan, but we do also have a celebration(?) of the selfie from London and a cover of a French ye-ye classic by a Spanish teenager.
There has been another deluge of terrific new releases and reissues reaching us here at the Moonbase over the last couple of weeks, dear listener, so this week's show is a chance to catch up. After far far too long, dear listener, it's time for a long-awaited return trip to the archives of EMI Pakistan and their huge vault of cheesy space disco, electronic folk tunes and great 80s-style music from the mid 90s.
No new show this week, dear listener, as your hosts have been summoned by the Galactic Space Council to explain why there hasn't been much steel drum music on the show recently. To keep you amused in the meantime, we're taking a trip back in time to August 2007 and a show originally broadcast on a local community radio station. For this edition of the show we had special guest Space Disco Jeff in the studio to delight us with some Swedish space disco. We also have two Elvis covers by Ananda...
Time to catch up with some new releases, reissues and recent arrivals here at the Moonbase. We have another track from the new album by patron saint of the show Jean-Jacques Perrey, two examples of twanging guitar, the sound of German missionaries in Nairobi, two new takes on library music, some Henry Mancini (Lollywood style), a miniature from the sensational new album by Dolly Dolly and we close the show with a stupendous piece of fairground music.

It's time to put your arm-rests down, stow your tray-table and make sure your seat back is upright as we prepare to take you on a journey into the stratosphere. We have a most stimulating program of in-flight entertainment planned for you this week, dear listener, taking in music from Finland, Pakistan, Brazil, South Africa, Italy, the US and Blackburn, Lancashire.
It's time for one of our hard-hiting shows, dear listener, where we explore a serious topic of the day by means of a selection of easy listening music. This week we're exploring the very limited confines of incarceration. So please don't try to escape.
It's time to take a stroll in the woods, dear listener, as we try to identify the Oak, the Sycamore, the Chestnut, the Willow and even the, er, swaying Palm. We also have an exclusive guided arborial visualisation in the form of a musical mashup between Laura Huxley and Russ Garcia.

It’s time for our third trip back to the fake 80s this week dear listener. Some, all or none of this week’s music may or may not originate from the 80s. But those tracks which aren’t really 30 years old are all heavily inspired by that golden age of popular music.

Having previously wrestled with snakes and amphibians, we thought it time to complete the trilogy with a show all about the rest of the cold-blooded family. We have giant lizards, crocodiles, alligators, turtles, an iguana, a chameleon and even something about the antipodean tuatara.
This week we present a selection of some our favourite new releases, reissues and discoveries, many of which have been brought to our attention by you, dear listener! You'll hear tracks from: a new compilation of work by Italian soundtrack supremo Stelvio Cipriani, the first ever retrospective of work by Moondog, two brand new radiophonic releases from Melbourne and London, music from three musicians in their 80s, something from the 80s and a track from a new documentary about the godfather of...

Get the sand between your toes, dear listener as we take you for a musical stroll along the shore on our seaside special. We start with the oldest track we’ve ever played on the show, being the original version(!) of Beside the Seaside. We also have shimmering radiophonic electronics, a musical sea shell, two shore-like slices of library music and one of the strangest versions of Ebb Tide you’ll ever hear.
Having recently brought you a show all about root vegetables, we thought it wise to present a show dedicated to the altogether sweeter, zingier world of fruit. You'll hear easy listening mangos, electronic apples, spaghetti oranges, Harry limes, bitter lemons, Norwegian sultanas, laid back strawberries, Hawaiian pineapples and prog peaches.
With the next general election only a matter of weeks away, we felt it was time to set out our stall to you, dear voters, by presenting a series of what we hope will be compelling musical arguments. By the end of the show we feel sure you will want to rush out and tell everyone in your neighbourhood to ... VOTE MOONBASE!

It's time to catch up with some of our favourite recent releases and reissues to reach us here on the Moon. We've got business funk from an extraordinary new collection from datassette, some German space disco from an associate of The Herb, French library music, tracks from the latest two releases from Ghost Box and the show reaches a truly portentous pinnacle of horror with music from Disasterpeace and the debut album from up-and-coming talent John Carpenter.
This week's show celebrates simple human friendship, whether that be expressed with a firm shake of the hand, a slap on the back or perhaps even, perish the thought, a hug. We have some borderline terrifying children singing about Jesus, two (yes two!) French chanteuses confusing friendship for love, some very laid back exotica, even more laid back saxhorn and positively catatonic tubas.
Due to commitments elsewhere in the galaxy, we are not able to bring you the scheduled show this week, dear listener. Instead, we take a trip back in time to the days we were doing the show on local radio. For this particular show, originally broadcast in November 2008, we embraced our feminine side and paid tribute to the Peruvian songbird, Yma Sumac. We also took the opportunity to wish maestro Ennio Morricone a very happy 80th birthday.
This show is one of the shows in our series themed around minerals and precious gems. We hope to eventually cover all the minerals and gems known to science. Look forward to our all-quartzite show in a few weeks' time. For our look at the world of diamonds, we have some German brass, some microtonal marimba and some of the most terrifying easy listening harmonica you are ever likely to hear. We're also delighted to announce the return of steel drums!
We thought it was about time we took a good long look at, well, time here at the Moonbase. We were prompted to do so by the work of film-making duo Don't Hug Me I'm Scared who produce short films which look as though they belong on children's TV until you look a little closer and start noticing an accumulation of disturbing detail.
